San Gimignano is a unique town, and its history really requires hundreds of pages. It rises on a hill, (334m high) dominating theElsaValleywith its towers. San Gimignano was once the seat of a small Etruscan village from the Hellenistic period (200-300 BC). It was probably first developed thanks to two Roman brothers who arrived here to escape from internal Roman wars. The previous name of the town was ‘Town ofSilvia’ coming from ‘selva’ which means woods, or possibly from ‘Silvio’ the name of the founder. You can breathe the atmosphere of its old allies; imagine life in the Medieval Ages and how many people walked along the streets before us, lived their lives in the houses; forget the crowd and sit on Duomo’s stairs looking at the night sky over the towers. Eventually, you’ll fall in love with our town and touch the most intimate side of San Gimignano, as we do.
